    Process

The Return-to-Duty process, step by step

Recommendations are individualized and made only after your evaluation. We cannot promise a specific outcome, recommendation, or completion date.

    1. 1

      Initial SAP evaluation

A structured remote video appointment reviews your situation and the referral information available, so a professional recommendation can be prepared.

    2. 2

      Written recommendations

You receive written education or treatment recommendations. Recommendations are individualized and are not decided in advance.

    3. 3

      Complete education or treatment

You complete the recommended education or treatment with an appropriate provider. Progress documentation is shared through the secure portal.

    4. 4

      Follow-up evaluation

A follow-up appointment reviews whether the recommendations have been completed and what documentation is available.

    5. 5

      Return-to-Duty testing

Where applicable, Return-to-Duty testing is arranged through your employer's testing process. Testing is not performed by this practice.

    6. 6

      Follow-up testing plan

A written follow-up testing plan is prepared and provided to the designated employer representative in accordance with applicable requirements.

Standard within 48 hours — expedited within 24 hours

Expedited service is available for time-sensitive deadlines, subject to confirmation.

    Report delivery

    How Your Report Is Delivered

The secure client portal handles intake, forms, uploads, messaging, and telehealth. Final reports are delivered separately to authorized recipients.

    Sessions Health

Intake forms, consent forms, document uploads, secure communication, and telehealth video appointments.

    Secure Report Delivery

Authorized reports and documentation are securely delivered as PDF files to the appropriate employer, Designated Employer Representative (DER), Third-Party Administrator (TPA), defense attorney, court, or other approved requesting party. For DOT SAP cases, the dates of the initial and follow-up evaluations will be logged in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, as applicable.

    DOT documentation

Where appropriate and authorized, DOT SAP documentation may be securely delivered as a PDF to the employer, DER, or designated third-party administrator.

    Authorization required

Reports and records are released only with valid written authorization, or where release is required or permitted by applicable law and regulation. Documentation is never sent to a party without authorization.

    Important limits

What a SAP evaluation can and cannot determine

The SAP process is defined by federal regulation. Your evaluator follows that process; the employer controls the return-to-duty decision.

    The process may include

  • Initial SAP evaluation
  • Education or treatment recommendations
  • Follow-up SAP evaluation
  • Return-to-Duty testing requirements
  • Follow-up testing plan
  • Communication with the employer, DER, or TPA where properly authorized
  • Our DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional provides SAP services in accordance with federal DOT requirements, including 49 CFR Part 40. DOT SAP services support commercial drivers and other safety-sensitive employees who have violated applicable federal drug and alcohol regulations.

    FMCSA Clearinghouse support

Standard service: the initial assessment/evaluation is completed and the applicable assessment date can then be documented in the Clearinghouse according to the applicable workflow. Expedited service: the evaluation is prioritized for completion within 24 hours where requirements and documentation allow. For DOT SAP cases, the dates of the initial and follow-up evaluations will be logged in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, as applicable. Clearinghouse actions and Return-to-Duty requirements depend on the individual case and completion of all applicable SAP recommendations and federal requirements. This practice is independent and is not endorsed by or affiliated with any government agency.

    No guaranteed eligibility

Clearinghouse actions and Return-to-Duty requirements depend on the individual case and completion of all applicable SAP recommendations and federal requirements. Completion of an evaluation does not guarantee Return-to-Duty eligibility.

    No guaranteed outcomes

No evaluator can guarantee a particular recommendation, a minimum education or treatment requirement, or a date by which the process will be complete.

    Employer and consortium requirements

Your employer, designated employer representative, or consortium may have additional requirements. Confirm those requirements in writing before booking.

    Records handling

SAP documentation is shared according to applicable regulations and valid written authorization. Where appropriate and authorized, documentation may be securely delivered as a PDF to the employer, DER, or designated third-party administrator rather than by unencrypted email.
